
Canonsburg, PA Welcome Sign Canonsburg is located between Pittsburgh and Washington, PA. It was incorporated in 1802. The Borough of Canonsburg was named for John Canon, who owned a flour and saw mill. Canonsburg, borough (1990 pop. 9,200) is in Washington County in South West Pa. Its steel and coal industries have declined significantly. A gram of radium produced there was presented to Marie Curie in 1921 when she visited the town. The Log Cabin School (est. 1777; the first school west of the Alleghenies) is preserved. The Black Horse Tavern was a famous gathering place for leaders of the Whisky Rebellion (1794). Roberts House (1804) is an example of W Pennsylvania manor architecture. Jefferson College was founded in Canonsburg in 1791 and incorporated in 1802. Jefferson and Washington Colleges merged in 1865, becoming W & J College in nearby Washington. Perry Como and Bobby Vinton helped put Canonsburg on the national map. Canonsburg is also noted for its numerous antique stores.
